Leave open the idea that you are not desperate.

 

Network Marketing is not for everyone. By any means. People who are super caught up in impressing other people and worried about their opinions have a hard time succeeding. That doesn’t mean they can’t or won’t. It’s just tougher to get them started.

Now, think about your habits in each one. Think back over the last week.

 

Just taking my 5 areas, I ask myself, what did I do this past week to show up solid and successful in my faith?

 

How about with my family and friends? In my relationships? Was I present? Loving? Caring?

 

How about with my fitness and financial goals? Was I on track?

 

This is the easiest way to be self accountable and your best coach.

 

You know what needs to be done to succeed in each area, don’t you? If you are really honest with yourself.

 

Who do your need to become to show up the way that serves you? What habits need to be in place? How committed are you to adopting those habits?

Like me, you've probably learned a lot during the last year and a half, not the least of which is how rewarding it is to have a business of your own.

 

One where you call the shots; can set your own hours, and ideally, work from home, online, with a steady stream of leads and clients coming in.

 

Here is what I have heard a lot of, lately. You may have, as well:

 

"You're lucky you can work from home."

 

Actually, luck has absolutely NOTHING to do with me having my own, thriving business, despite a local and world shut down, and the ability to work from home.

 

Luck has NOTHING to do with leads and clients that come in, almost on autopilot.

 

I’m grateful, without a doubt. I count my blessings every day. But, Luck had nothing to do with it. ANY of it.

 

It wasn’t “luck” that I quit my corporate job; it wasn’t luck that I starting teaching myself the internet and online marketing back in 1999. Back when everyone around me told me the internet was a fad and I was crazy.

I didn’t have a crystal ball or a fairy Godmother. In fact, I didn't have much of anything back then, to guide me.

So, how did it all happen, then?

I made a decision to change my life. I focused and invested time into making a plan to transition from employee mindset to business owner. It was all on purpose...it wasn’t luck.

There is a psychology behind sales and those who thrive at selling, converting, signing up team members and growing their business have learned it, even if they don’t realize they have.

I was taught by a brilliant copy writer to remember that - People are bored out of their minds and looking for entertainment and things to brighten up their day. Entertain them and they will pay attention and share your content.

You may think that’s great for everyone else but you are not a great writer.

Well, that’s another learned skill. You may not ever become Shakespeare, but you can jazz up your writing.

Power words are a great way to do this.

For starters, the word YOU is always at the top of the list. Your audience doesn’t care about you first and foremost, they care about themselves. So use the word YOU more than I or me.

Other good words - Imagine, Because, Astounding, Proven.

Words that create an image and force the mind to think are powerful - Tsunami, soul sucking, Tidalwave, Crashing, Deafening.

Let’s take deafening - Do you want to appeal to someone else’s angst about getting out of their current situation? Having more in life?

Here’s one way to say it.

I was so tired of my situation. I was ready for a change.

Imagine changing that to -

The sounds in my head were deafening. The tsunami of thoughts I was having on a regular basis about needing a change finally reached their peak. Now is the time.

 

How many people might be compelled more by that statement than the first?

Remember Sully, the airline pilot of the Landing on the Hudson airline disaster miracle.

 

He couldn’t quit because the going got tough. That was when he had to draw in deep and internal on skills he was taught, mastered but had never used.

 

Deep inside, you have some skills and character traits that make you capable of handling chaos; pushing through overwhelm and challenges.

I don’t think I’ve ever met anyone who hasn’t dealt with imposter syndrome at one time or another.

 

That feeling like you really aren’t as good as others; not up to par; that you are somehow a fraud.

 

I have felt it numerous times, even after I became a million dollar earner in network marketing.

 

Before speaking on stage; when submitting a proposal for a speaking spot; when asked to be interviewed on a podcast, and even launching my academy.

 

The funny thing is - there is nothing I teach in my academy that can’t be duplicated and that I have not used and monetized. NOTHING.

 

I have all of the boxes checked to have earned my success.

 

But, you know what I don’t have? A college degree, and I have allowed that to keep me playing small in my mind too many times. Long ago, I made a decision that my income would always be tied to my level of formal education and therefore it would be impossible for me to make more than about $60,000 a year.

 

No idea where that number came from.

 

I was recently offered a nice 6 figure income by a network marketing company who wanted to hire me as their field trainer for distributors. It was flattering and yet even then, I remember thinking - I wonder what they’ll say when they find out I don’t have my degree.

 

Here is how I have learned to handle those limiting beliefs and feelings of being an imposter.

 

I keep a journal of nice things people have said about me; awards I have earned; accomplishments I have achieved.

 

All the way back to singing the solo at my Christmas musical in 3rd grade, and the music teacher hugging me after and telling me how absolutely perfect it was.

 

I flip through this book when I am feeling unworthy or not enough and I remind myself of all the times I was exactly who and what I needed to be.

If your upline is telling you to just get more followers, that is NOT the solution.

If your upline is telling you just to copy, paste and DM everyone you know  - that IS a problem.

 

 

That’s why we are spending time today on the topic of spammy DMs, and this strategy being taught by some.

Let me start by answering the question - does it work?

The short answer - Yes, sometimes it certainly does.

Most times, it does not.

It’s not a long haul best practice strategy. There is a time and place for DMs, and I’ll cover that and the how tos.

Some things to think about:

First, have you ever received these?

New friend request, you accept and then BAM - the pitch.

Long, multiple paragraphs; how you are missing out, and it’s THE next big thing. If I had a dime…..

My strongest downline team member had called about attending a very exclusive training by my main mentor in Direct Sales. It was in New Orleans.

But, I worked it out and went.

As fate would have it, I ended up at breakfast with this icon, alone, before the event.

She asked how my business was going and I went into "Poor me, it's not working because of everyone else" mode.

 

She looked at me, dead on, and asked the pivotal question -

I’m going to share my top 3 with you, and then you can decide if these resonate with you.

 

  1. Daily Thought and Mindset Work - how are you feeling? What emotional state are you in? Are you feeling empowered and determined no matter what? Or, are you struggling with limiting beliefs? I have tools I use and coach my clients on to move them out of these doubts.
  2. Share your story - lately, that has been largely done on social media. Do you know how to introduce your story and do so in a way that gets people coming to you? Asking you what you do? Becoming the hunted and not the hunter? This is your marketing.

 

  1. Stay consistent with people and follow up. Stories and situations change daily, so you want to stay in the game and in touch. That does not mean constantly contacting them to see if they’ve changed their mind. There is more of an art to it.

Is Social Selling Hard? That’s just a thought, and here is my answer to it after being asked this in my Street Smart Wealth Academy.

It can be time consuming, for sure. I'm here, 21 years later after taking my business online and it WAS time consuming to learn it. To master it.

And, ALL of that is just a thought. It will be time consuming for some, and snap of the fingers for others. It's a choice, in other words.

I was old school, too, and I was SICK of old school. I made the decision and committed to learning this new skill set and it totally changed my life. It's what I wanted and what I was seeking.

I was tired of:

Family Friends/Warm Market

Mall Walking

Business Cards on Windshields

Talking to “everyone” - waiters and such

Buying leads

Networking groups - I had small kids!

I wanted to become the hunted not the hunter .

I wanted simple systems for follow up and sharing my business

Time freedom - build while I sleep

Leverage - how could I make my time create more impact?

To do what I enjoy - writing, sharing, speaking and educating and inspiring.

Content marketing - this excites me and scares some

I had run out of other ways to market my business; ways that I would actually do, because I said NO to many.

The internet offered so much possibility! I grabbed hold and haven't let go!

My thought was, and still is this - time is going to pass, so why not invest it in an asset for myself and my business.

Do a personal inventory to explore what you are really good at.

 

For me, I am super strong in understanding and mastering my thoughts and mindset. I have tools I use daily and in turn, teach these to my clients so we can work them out of the areas they are stuck - I’m not good enough, who will listen to me; I’m afraid of the camera for social media….and so on.

 

I am also really good at messaging and story telling, so I use this to create my social media content, and teach the same to my clients.

 

We all have powerful stories inside of us and from our past. Stories that will resonate deeply and allow us to easily, effortlessly and elegantly attract our tribe to us.

Push marketing is when you are constantly pushing your marketing at people.

 

Offline, it is stuffing your business card into the hands of others, along with brochures and information about what you are selling. Billboard and magazine marketing is also push marketing, but we expect it in media content forms.

 

Online, we can get more annoyed as we don’t expect people, our family and friends to be constantly pushing their business and products to us. It gets old.

 

Does that mean they shouldn’t market? Of course not, just be creative.

What truly Duplicates in network marketing? There are only 2 things, all the rest are Myths our profession has spoken of, and confused many people with.

The first and most important thing that duplicates is mindset. Belief, and learning to let go of self limiting, self sabotaging beliefs. PERIOD.

 

You can’t out earn your limiting thoughts and beliefs about yourself. You can, however, overcome them. This does not mean fear and doubt goes away completely. Ever, for anyone.

 

Once you have the tools and training to push through them, to evaluate them for what they are - just a made up story - then you will see things change. Quickly and dramatically.

 

The second thing that duplicates, in network marketing, are the systems in place for sharing how the business works. Most companies have these tools in place. Simple, and short is better. People do not need to know how to make it to the top of the compensation plan. Show them how to get their investment back. And, how to make $500-1000 a month, in most cases, and then ask for a decision.

 

The way we meet people; the stories we share; the way we communicate, that will vary from person to person.

 

There is nothing worse than seeing someone new trying to be like some other leader - copy paste, copy paste the same old boring stuff. It doesn’t work, does it?

 

Work on your mindset and all the rest will fall into place for duplication.

Is this one of those Pyramid Schemes?

Ever heard that? Or feared hearing it?

Why do people say this, and even more important, why do we fear it?

Run from it? Tolerate it?

Do you know what the best response is to that question? There are two, really.

The first is to simply ASK - what do you mean by a pyramid scheme?

Then shut up. I mean it - close your mouth and wait, as long as it takes, for an answer.

If the response is something negative, here are two responses -

First, you could say - do you really think I would get involved with something like that, and then share it with others?

And, again, just listen.

Or, you can SAY - wow, that is way too smart for me to put something like that together.

And, again, wait and see what comes next.

The most important thing you can do is keep your posture. Stay strong and in control.

Pretty soon you’ll find you never hear that question anymore. I never do. Funny how when you build your belief, it stops showing up!

Failure.

It’s a word, that usually has a thought or two with it.

What comes to mind for you?

Common analogy - when a baby learns to walk, or starts to learn, we don’t give up on her when she tries those first steps and falls to her knees. No, we cheer for her, pick her back up and immediately encourage her to try again.

Why is it different in your network marketing business? With a prospect? Someone who says no?

It’s not. You are just choosing to make it mean far more than what it is -

Simply a chance to learn, grow and get better.

You’ve probably heard - Fail your way to success.

You’ve probably heard that from some people who have done just that.

That is why they say it. They know it’s true.

Fears, we all have them.

What if we could make friends with and release our fears, in our network marketing business and in life.

Fear is not something we ever eliminate completely from our lives. We simply learn to expect it.

It’s normal.

Accept it. We can’t change it.

And push through those fears.

To push through fears, we must first realize a few key things. Most fear is not real; at least not at this moment; it has no power over us, unless we choose for it to; and it is possible to work with it in our minds to reduce it dramatically.

Haters Shamers and Trolls - bullies, in other words. They’ve always been there, we’ve all had them, and Social Media just gave them enough space to hide, and a space to be loud and proud, and a coward.

My mom used to say - be worried when people aren’t talking about you. I try to fall back ion that during those times I am feeling a bit of comparanoia or self doubt about putting myself on Social Media.

Is my hair ok? Is that a new wrinkle? Are those bags under my eyes? Does this shirt make me look washed out?

I also remind myself that if you ran into me in the store, this is how I would look.

You’ll attract your tribe with your vibe, and they do not want you to be perfect. In fact, far from it. They want to be reminded that you are just like them. And, this means they can do it too.

Remember this - the critics are never the ones doing more than you. They are doing less. Far less. They just have a big mouth, and thoughtless fingers!

Is it wrong to put a positive expectations on a prospect? Most times when they say no indirectly by avoiding me that's what causes my disappointments

There is no "right or wrong" - there are only learning opportunities. EVERYTHING we experience is an opportunity for growth and learning.

It can create major frustration to put an expectation on a prospect of them saying YES, to the product or opportunity, or any of "their" actions.

We can "make up stories" about other people - why they say no; they they ignore us, and so on. But, we don't REALLY know why, unless they tell us.

So, no expectations, and no assumptions.

And, no disappointments (for very long) about another's actions or inactions.

Set an expectation on YOU - what YOU will do, consistently.

How YOU will show up. How YOU will grow, learn and improve.

We only control ourselves. No one else. Be the best YOU that you can be, and the rest will fall into place.

Bless and release those who avoid you. It's more about them, than you. And, don't be afraid to say - hey, it's okay of you say no, this is not for me.

Give them permission and honor their decision and space, for now. Over time, you may be amazed at how many people will circle back around and be a YES, when they time is right for them!

It’s a given, no sense trying to change it.

 

Here is what we can change though, and must if we want to move forward…to succeed….to master our goals.

 

We have to look deeper into both words and sort them out in our own lives, and within our own skill sets.

 

I hear things like this all of the time:

 

I’m stuck.

 

I don’t understand technology.

 

It’s like a foreign language.

 

I don’t know how.

 

I can’t.

 

Here’s something to ponder -

 

Whatever it is that has you feeling stuck - do you know anyone anywhere who may have felt this way and then got unstuck?

 

Anyone anywhere who didn’t understand technology but then figured it out?

 

Anyone anywhere who learned a foreign language?

 

Found the answer to “I don’t know?”

 

Stopped saying I can’t and figured out how they could?

 

Think of every baby ever born - including you.

 

They are born completely helpless with no knowledge or experience at doing anything.

 

Does it stop them…permanently?

 

OR do they - figure out how to roll over, sit up, feed themselves, walk, run, skip, ride a bike?

 

So, what is your problem then?

 

Are you going to continue to argue for your limitations, or start arguing for your possibilities?

 

I hope you choose the possibilities. That is so much more rewarding, better and in service to yourself and the world.

We have a tendency to think that our goal in our business is to sign up, convince, or convert everyone we know and talk to into our business or products.

 

Not so.

 

That is dangerous thinking, honestly and will set you up for quitting.

 

Here is the reality:

 

Our goal is to meet people; share what we do, make an offer,

 

An offer is NOT always buying or trying your product or the business. It could be referrals; support in general.

 

Sharing what we do means sorting. Not everyone will be right. Could you sell a side of beef to a vegetarian? Not likely.

 

Would you spend time trying? Not likely.

 

It is the same in your business.

 

Sort, don’t sell. Sorting starts with knowing who your ideal client is; what their pain point is; and the solution you provide.

 

Get very clear on these things. Write them down. Memorize them and know how to speak that language.

 

Once you’ve sorted and have determined that you have someone who may be potentially right for the products or business; now you can share more.

 

Not selling.

 

But, positioning your offer to see if there is a fit.

Which would you prefer to have in your business, or rather which one sounds more fun…like something you would commit to and stick to:

 

Hustle and Hard work, or Ease,,,,flow….effortless and elegant.

 

Hustle and hard work are typically how we feel when we are doing something out of synch with our natural rhythm.

 

Easily, elegantly, and effortlessly, in the flow of life and calm sounds a lot better.

 

And, as someone who has worked my business from both angles, I can tell you that the latter is much more fun, lucrative and enticing to others.

 

Hustle and hard work lead to burn out.

 

Network Marketing is a volunteer business, and no one wants to volunteer for hard.

 

When you don’t wake up each day with a clear, understandable plan of what you need to do to move your business forward, that leaves most with a lack of confidence.

You run out of people to talk to.

No one responds to your social media posts.

Doing constant “challenges” put you in hustle mode. And the feeling is graspy and desperate. You may know what I am talking about.

Always on your phone, up late nights, family is sick of it.

The most important skill you can learn is good communication with others. This does not mean talking AT them. Constantly talking about your product is talking AT people.

And, they tune out and don’t hear you.

Here are the skills you must master -

 Get clear on what you sell, who you sell to, and how to sell to them. Online, these means developing good “success language” that speaks directly to their challenge; and your solution.

 Know how to ask, answer and deliver on their questions and concerns before they even ask.

Know when to take it off the public venue and offline. Don’t try to let a social conversation close your deal.

Be real, be engaged, be interested. Be conversational and don’t “move in for the kill.”

 Never share a link without permission. We have a tendency to want to just “spray and pray,” plastering our link everywhere we can, hoping to catch someone and “rope them in.”

The problem is, you are modeling for them what you will expect and ask them to do if they join you, and most people view this as extremely spammy. You probably do, too, even if you have been guilty of doing this.

How do I find people for my Network Marketing business? How do I share what I am doing in a way that feels authentic and not "salesy?"

These are two questions I had myself; and now have answered for decades! 

My short answer - you don't find them; you let them find YOU.

And, here is how!

In 1999, after attending an internet seminar, I saw some genuine potential in using online methods as a tool to "reverse roles" and allow those people who were interested in a home business to find me, and let me know they wanted to know more. 

So, I decided to give this “Internet thingie” a go, and build a web presence, and ultimately a business online. 

Lots of people lined up to tell me I was crazy; I wouldn’t be successful; it couldn’t be done. I calmly put my blinders and ear muffs on and got busy proving them wrong. 

Once I was successful, people started saying I got “lucky” because I had an early start; that it was easier “back then.”

Then, I was asked what I would do if the internet went away; how would I stay in business.

Home based business, work from home; great home biz; how do I work from home; what's a good home business?

People are scared and looking for solutions, in a way they never did before. Many are struggling with job loss, health concerns, they need flexibility , kids are home and need home schooled. And, more.

This is why I believe that now is the perfect time to build your business, and attract those who are interested. You can launch or relaunch your business.

Social media has become the greatest tool ever to attract this audience, and it is also highly competitive. It's important to understand and remember that nobody comes to social media with their credit card out, ready to buy something or start a new business.

 It doesn’t mean they won’t. But, you must be intentional and have a plan to be effective online. Otherwise, you turn off the very people who could be interested and whom you could help.

We tend to think of dating as what we do for a romantic partner. But, what if we shifted how we think of our prospects and becoming attractive to those in and around our business?

You are actively getting out there and meeting people and spending time with them. “Dating someone” means you're seeing somebody specific, with purpose and on a regular basis. ... You're spending time with a person (or persons) in hopes of finding a committed relationship.

 

Think about this with regard to the relationships you build in your business.

Ambassadors for you.

Here’s what my clients tell me, and I get it. Almost on the daily, they stare at their screen, spinning their wheels trying to figure out what to share on social media to create SOMETHING - a like, a comment, some interest, a Direct Message, maybe, and wow, a sale or signup would be nice.

Right? Is this you?

You ponder, write, edit, delete, and repeat. And nothing ever gets out there. Or, at least not consistently and not content that pulls people to you.

And, you HATE how overwhelming and time consuming it is for you.

You’ve purchased content calendars to give you prompts, and you start, then stop because it's starting to feel so…forced, so generic, so stale, even.

You’ve probably even fallen into the trap of copying someone else’s content, maybe your upline or someone in your company, because it worked for them; it inspired you, so….

But, you didn’t get the same results. And frankly, you are exhausted trying to come up with your own clever words.

Here’s what I want you to know and HEAR from me - it’s not because you are a “bad writer” that makes you struggle. It’s not even that you don’t know what to say.

The struggle is due to the way you are thinking about creating content. Or, overthinking it, in some cases.

It's your THOUGHTS about content writing that make it feel so hard.

You can't keep beating yourself up about it every day, or every week.

The reason why your content writing feels so challenging is because you have expectations about it. You expect this ONE post to yield a certain outcome. A certain number of likes, or responses.

You have told yourself that you have to do it "right" in order for it to come across the right way.

You are busy judging if it has "value" or if it's "inspiring" enough.

You probably suffer from Comparanoia and fear of Other People’s Opinions. You think you aren’t good enough; that no one is going to care about your story; your struggles; your fears.

You watch others who have struggled and then had the breakthrough and so you are hesitant to share your story because you have not yet had that breakthrough.

But, your hesitation is what is keeping you from the breakthrough.

It’s keeping you stuck.

Here’s the catch - the struggle and the “stuckness” are what people are waiting to hear from you.

Why?

It reassures them that it’s okay. They’re okay.

Social media isn’t selling. It requires you to be SOCIAL.

Posting with the “Spray and Pray” process does NOT work.

Do you know the best way to get others interested in you? Be interested in them. TRULY engaged and interested.

Are you liking, and more importantly commenting in an engaging way, and having real conversations with people you enjoy talking to; and who might be a perfect fit for you.

Be real, be you, and don’t be graspy and loaded with an agenda in your conversations.

Just connect and get to know people.

Pick 10 people a day to engage with. Track it.

Be consistent. They will begin to see your posts.

This is how the algorithm works. Engage with them first. Get on their radar as well as Instagram or Facebook.

Try it for a month and let me know how it goes. I’m pretty sure I already know the answer!

New year, new thoughts, new hopes and dreams. So, what is it about goals and goal setting that deserves our time and attention?

 

It’s human nature to always have hope, possibility, and expect the potential of what might be!

I want to dive into goals, goal setting, the fears we have around this process, and what we really must know about goals.

 

One of my favorite quotes is by Jim Rohn, on goals -

 

The true power and success in setting a goal is the transformation, growth and learning you accomplish on the way to achieving it.

 

The challenge with most goal setting is:

 

Random thought of what we want.

 

No true planning before.

 

No planning for actually achieving it.

 

And, 365 days stretching ahead of us.

 

The problem with this much time to achieve the goal:

 

We procrastinate.

 

We forget.

 

We get distracted.

 

We let fear settle in.

 

Last week, we picked one big STRETCH goal for 2021. Or, at least I did. Have you?

 

Here’s what most often happens once we select that goal.

 

We start out excited, feel anticipation, big expectations.

 

Then, our monkey mind throws open the door.

 

“Who do you think you are? You can’t possibly think you are capable of achieving that goal. Why would you even want to try?”

 

People will laugh.

 

You’ll Make a fool of yourself.

 

Just be happy with what you have.

 

Listen to hear a process to get you headed toward your goals.

Ready to kick 2020 to the curb? Have much more in 2021. So, let’s do it.

1st, Create a crystal clear vision for your business and the lifestyle you want to create through your business. The "why" is the most important part of the whole equation. It doesn’t matter what type of entrepreneur you study - real estate, internet marketer, network marketer, inventor, author/speaker - and so on - the key elements to success are the same. 

2nd, know your plan - Write out your daily marketing plan and do it. Take steps daily, and invest in your education, refuse to quit. You need a way to connect with new people daily; share what you do in a way that connects with them and does not spam them.

3rd, Uncover hidden challenges that are holding you back - this is where you must get very clear, very authentic and very committed to removing these roadblocks. It starts with realizing and acknowledging that NO ONE holds you back but YOU.

-Push past your fear and do things that move you out of your comfort zone. What you focus on develops.
