Putting the Fun in Your Network Marketing Business 

 

Enjoy the journey in Network Marketing - why I always thought this was such a dumb thing to say, until I “Got it!”

 

First, make a decision to HAVE FUN!

 

People love to be around FUN because most have so little of it in their careers.

 

Focus on abundance and not scarcity. This can be a challenge, and it is SO important because you can’t really move forward when you are focused on what you do not have.

 

Fear, self doubt, jealousy and these tough emotions are a challenge. We want to acknowledge them, and at the same time, ask them to move right along.

 

Make a list of everything you might have, do and be once you hit your goals.

 

Create a dream book or vision board. Set aside three hours to yourself, put on great music, write candles, maybe even pour a glass of bubbly and just dream big! 

 

Get out of the feeling of lack, and this starts by starting with a gratitude exercise.

 

Do you have what you need RIGHT NOW? Roof over your head, car to drive, food in the house, warmth or cold, depending on the season, a bed to sleep in, someone who loves you, even if just your dog?

 

We live in the RIGHT now, so focus on finding the joy in each minute and then plan how you can take action each day to create more of what you want.

 

Develop some success language, if you are fearful, to let people know you have a business you are having fun with and wonder if you can practice on them. 

 

Ask for feedback, and be open to it. Ask for their input. What would they do differently? How might you improve?

 

Have fun with your team! Plan team calls, and just share and engage. Plan local events for those in the area - pizza night, or movie night and just stuff to be social and have fun. Business will come up, naturally.

 

Plan special events for your team at your company convention. Promote it weekly for at least 90 days leading up to the event. Have people pre-register so THEY are more likely to attend.

 

Remember your team on special occasions - birthday’s anniversaries and anniversaries on your team.

 

Make it a goal to reach out to one person to make them feel special each day. 

 

You’ve heard it before but a daily gratitude journal can really take you places! 

 

 

ACTION STEPS

 

Read the success stories of others and determine - what did they do that I am not doing?

 

When is your next company event? Get registered and get it on your calendar. Ask those on your team to JOIN you and share some ideas of what you’ll do together there.

 

Have a small gathering for your local team - just for fun - not business oriented. Business will naturally come up!

 

Send fun cards to your team and prospects that keep you on their mind, but don’t directly talk about business.

Creating a Daily Routine for Success in Your Direct Sales Business 

 

 

Success comes with a full calendar of income producing activities. There are many activities you will do having to do with your business but there are only a few that create that end result - so always focus on those FIRST.

 

Here is what those are -

 

Calling new people daily and asking them to take a look - minimum of 2 will create a pipeline of massive success over time. You must create momentum and YOU get that started. In your first 90 days, you may not see a whole lot on the surface for your efforts, and this is where compound interest and understanding timing are so important.

 

About 20 minutes max.

 

Follow up with previous prospects. Don’t accept a no one time, as it is always a Not Now! I promise, if you will keep in touch and follow up with those who you’ve spoken with in the past, you will see outrageous success.

 

About 20 minutes max.

 

Strike up conversations with new people as you are out and about.

 

Varies

 

Call one person on your team and just check in. Be a friend first and don’t push, but do let them know you are, are there and ready to support them.

 

10 minutes.

 

Mail 2-5 follow up postcards.

 

5-10 minutes

 

 

Mindset training - always put at least 30 minutes of self development into your income producing activities. Now, you may be thinking - huh, that’s not an income producing activity, but in many ways it is, and it is so important.

 

Train a new team member - this will vary from day to day, but set it out there as a goal and a plan and it will begin to show up.

 

30 minutes.

 

 

Do you see the small blocks of time? This is reasonable and doable for anyone who is truly committed.

 

Here are some other steps to work on in the small cracks of time -

 

Come up with new ideas for marketing. These can be -

 

Your Blog

A Podcast

Videos

Other content creation

Networking events offline such as meetup

 

And, some other active business building ideas are -

 

Schedule an in home presentation to showcase your products and business.

 

Get out your chicken list and make 3 calls. Be honest, let them know they are on your chicken list and you know they are successful and would just love some advice.

 

Take a millionaire to coffee or lunch and see what you can learn. Remember you are the average of the 5 people you hang out with. You don’t have to change your friends entirely if they aren’t your role models for success, but you can surround yourself with others!

 

Here is my favorite daily routine -

 

Call 10 new people.

Send 10 follow up emails after phone conversation or message.

Mail 10 postcards if at all possible.

Create a piece of marketing content for online marketing - blog post, podcast, video.

Make sure marketing is ongoing on social media of previously created content.

 

It is our habits and daily routines that will make or break us in business and in life. Do something every day to grow your business. Write down your plan and your routine.

 

Put it in your calendar.

 

Be the toughest boss you know.

 

IT’s what will keep you moving in the right direction - forward!

 

 

ACTION STEPS

 

Take a look at your calendar for the last month. How many income producing activities do you have listed each day?

 

What 3 activities each day that have income producing potential will you commit to?

 

Focus on 15 minute blocks of time, not large chunks.

 

Consider getting an accountability partner.

 

No excuses - seriously - just NO EXCUSES.

Social Media Marketing Conversation Starters 

 

I don’t know why, but knowing what to do while out and about on Social Media in order to market (not sell) my Network Marketing business came naturally for me.

 

But, clearly, based on questions and feedback I hear, it does NOT for many people.

 

So I thought we could run through a few ideas on what you can post out there to invite engagement and attract more of your target audience.

 

1. Request feedback

People LOVE to give feedback. You can ask for feedback about products, business ideas, and so on. 

2. Use Humor

Humor makes everything more fun, and at the same time, you must be careful. Funny, clean, straight and narrow jokes can go a long way!

 

3. Share a personal story

Why do you think reality TV is so popular? People like to be on “the inside!”

4. Share business tips and stats

What’s going on in the business world and how can that add value? Great way to get shares, likes and Retweets.

5. Pictures paint a thousand words

Look for funny, slightly controversial or unexpected photos that create engagement. Like humor, use good judgement. 

6. Quotes

Funny, inspirational, and motivational all work well to illicit comments and shares. This is especially true for image quotes.

 

7. Social and breaking news

Remember these are social sites so share social and trending updates. Who’s playing in the world series? March madness? Top cities to retire (yahoo.com is great for this!) And, when there is breaking news, weigh in. I live in California, earthquake rumblings are common. Makes for good engagement.

8. Polls or surveys, yes or no

Asking your fans to participate in a survey or poll not only gets them talking, it gets them invested in finding out the results. This is great for getting people to contribute their answer. And, they love to come back and see what others shared.

9. Share a question you’ve been asked by a follower

Share a question and ask what others would do in that situation.

10. ‘What would you do’ questions

Share an experience and then ask your followers what they would in that situation. I have a book of questions I use.

 

11. Traveling? Ask for recommendations

When you are traveling, ask for suggestions. Restaurants, hotels, theater and so on. People LOVE to share their faves!

12. Fill in the blank

An oldie but a goodie. Make a statement but let your fans fill in the blank. Example: “My favorite thing to do on the weekends is ___________”. Or, The best thing about my career is _______”

13. What is your favorite memory

Share your own favorite memory, or ask your fans to share theirs!

 

 

14. Ask a random question

These can be amazing - Are you a coffee drinker? Tea? Or neither? Morning person or late night moonlighter!

 

 

ACTION STEPS

 

Have a strategy for this.

 

Be sure you are also out commenting and engaging on the posts of others to help YOU stay in their newsfeed.

 

Be consistent, have fun!

 

Avoid drama!

Defining Moments In Your Network Marketing Business

 

 

As I asked, what takes someone from stuck to stardom in Network Marketing?

 

Here are a few of my defining moments that I’ll cover on today’s show -

 

1. Realization that the airline industry is NOT stable (What can I say, I am a slow learner!)

 

2. Desire to be home with my children.

 

3. Competitive nature that caused me to REFUSE to quit, and be one of the masses. I wanted to be in the “rare” category.

 

4. Attending my first Network Marketing Company convention

 

5. Attending my 6th convention, same company and being in the Network Marketing nosebleed seats.

 

6. Mean Janeen - my neighbor who flat out laughed at me.

 

7. The encouragement of Meg Kelly Smith.

 

8. The support of my husband.

 

9. The opinion of my children.

 

10. Sheer disgust.

What Stops You In Your Network Marketing Business

 

I mentioned that I asked this and had hundreds of responses. Most all came down to one thing, and one particular one by Jim intrigued me and I wanted to cover it on today’s show. Jim asks -

 

“My biggest obstacle I would like you to address is how do i overcome my belief that others will not do what it takes to build the business. I feel sometimes that I may be wasting my time since people today seem like they don't have the ambition like I do in building a mlm business.”

 

 

I’ve been coaching people for over 10 years in Direct Sales. I’ve been team building for nearly 21, and that is its own form of coaching. But, seriously working with people to launch their business has been part of my business for 10 years.

 

Everything from the basics of launching a business, what to say, how and when to follow up, the EXACT words to say, how to ask good questions. 

 

And then, on to the specifics of attracting leads online - how to set up the blog, consistency, content, social media and marketing, and so on, I have seen hundreds of people spend LOTS of money on the mechanics, and yet never really take action on what they have obtained in terms of the knowledge.

 

Sound Familiar? 

 

It all comes down to belief…or LACK of belief. 

 

Which takes me back to Jim’s question -

 

How do i overcome my belief that others will not do what it takes to build a Network Marketing business. I feel sometimes that I may be wasting my time since people today seem like they don't have the ambition like I do in building a mlm business.

 

As long as Jim, or any of us hold onto those limiting beliefs, we will continue to experience EXACTLY what we are expecting.

 

And, we tend to then fall back on these beliefs as EXCUSES to not take action in our business.

 

Let’s look at the language Jim uses, and many of us use.

 

“Others will not do….”

 

“Wasting my time….”

 

and the big one -

 

“People TODAY seem like they don’t have the ambition like I do….”

 

So, there are a lot of questions here that need to be answered - and, if you might be feeling this way, just substitute your name for Jim’s, as this is not REALLY just about Jim. He asked the question for many of us…

 

1. Does this mean Jim is NOT taking action at all, because he thinks he might be wasting his time?

 

2. What does his daily actions and calendar look like?

 

3. How many people has he talked to and experienced this with?

 

This is really the REVEALING question.

 

I have people say all of the time - EVERYONE I talk to is negative, or not interested. And, when I press the issue, and ask - how many people TOTAL would you say that is?

 

It is almost ALWAYS 6 or less.

 

Do 6 people make up the whole demographic of your area, and are you REALLY willing to bank your future and your dreams and goals on 6 or fewer people?

 

When I launched the webinar series I am doing on mindset, I asked the question - what is your biggest obstacle to success?

 

1/3 didn’t answer and of the 2/3 who did, it all came down to 4 primary things -

 

Lack of Self Belief

 

Procrastination

 

Time Management

 

Focus

 

And, Fear.

 

Here is the thing - all 4 of these AND fear really shift up into the first category and that is BELIEF.

 

 

Lack of Self Belief, or most specifically, those beliefs we have made up about ourselves, that in most cases are not true.

 

Think about it - why do we procrastinate? IF we REALLY are excited about our business, and we REALLY believe it can take us where we want to go; then why would we procrastinate taking action? Because we have self belief issues!

 

IF we REALLY are excited about our business, and we REALLY believe it can take us where we want to go; then why would not make time in our busy schedule to take action? After all, EVERYONE is busy and ALMOST everyone who has become a millionaire through Network Marketing did so while working full time, juggling a family and a bunch of other commitments? Because we have self belief issues!

 

IF we REALLY are excited about our business, and we REALLY believe it can take us where we want to go; then why would we have problems with focus and knowing WHAT to do (assuming we were trained correctly, and ANYONE can get the right training!)? 

 

Would we struggle making time for follow up calls? Would we struggle with not knowing what to say? 

 

No, we would not. But we do because we have self belief issues!

 

 

We all have these limiting beliefs about ourselves that we have contemplated, shaped and adopted as “our story” over the course of our lives, usually brought on by early life experiences and situations that we were unable to really evaluate and view objectively, based on our age and limited resources.

 

These are what create our lack of self belief.

 

So, when you take a look at your obstacles, and you get your own chatter mind and objections out of the way, what do you come up with as to WHY you view these as obstacles?

 

And, here is a simple question to ask yourself when you see these limiting beliefs come up for you -

 

How do I know this to be true?

 

So, when you ask yourself a question like Jim’s - How do i overcome my belief that others will not do what it takes to build a Network Marketing business. I feel sometimes that I may be wasting my time since people today seem like they don't have the ambition like I do in building a mlm business.

 

Ask yourself - how do I know it to be true that people today seem like they don’t have the ambition like I do….

 

 

Or, when you think - no one I know will be interested, ask yourself -

 

How do I know this to be true?

 

And then open your mind to honestly evaluate the belief you have made up for yourself.

 

 

 

ACTION STEPS

2. Write out 3 limiting beliefs that throw you into STUCK mode.

 

3. Use the question - how do I know this to be true - when you find this coming up for yourself

 

4. Be kind to yourself about these belief and avoid the tendency to beat yourself up

 

5. KNOW that change is possible, if you choose to change. It is a choice.

Sometimes new people can struggle with how to explain what network marketing is, or whether it is really a legitimate business model.

 

On today’s show, I want to share some thoughts on how Network Marketing stacks up to Real Estate and Franchising and give you some language you can use that just plain makes sense.

Franchises, Real Estate and Network Marketing similarities

 

I have had a lot of team partners ask me - how do I explain what we do? What network marketing IS?

 

Good question because sometimes people really don’t get it, or they’ve had a negative experience or heard someone mention - pyramid.

 

I’ll share more about pyramids in a minute.

 

When my husband and I were researching ways to diversity our income, outside of the airline industry and something I could do while still being a full tine mom, we seriously considered franchising . It sure look like an option that might provide what we were looking for in terms of securing our retirement and finances.

Since I was extremely skeptical about Network Marketing, and still came into it somewhat kicking and screaming, we were not even SORT OF open to looking at it as a serious option or career profession. 

Keep this in mind when someone tells you no! People DO change!

As part of our research, we toured the country and visited 3 different franchise headquarters. A few things were always a deterrent to actually jumping in –

1. Start Up costs - it takes a LOT of money, and they are very upfront about the amount of time before you see a return on investment
2. Additional money needed to sustain while in growth mode
3. Time requirement, given that we had not yet started a family

As time went by, and we started our family, we became educated and open to the idea of Network Marketing and jumped in with both feet, never looking back!

Now, it’s been over 20 years since we’ve had a successful network marketing business and I am so grateful for what I have learned and the income I have made.

And, I do like the share the comparison of Network Marketing and franchising. Both have a parent company that provides support, training and essentially a “licensing right” to use their name.

With both, it offers a turn key system and if you will just FOLLOW the system, you can’t fail. Even with network marketing.

Whenever I am talking to someone interested in my business and they tell me how they have “tried” other network marketing businesses without success, I ask deeper questions, and most specifically want to get to exactly what action steps they have taken.

Usually, they have talked to less than 6 people before they quit and yet I hear “Everyone I talked to was not interested. “ Here is what I know - the first 6 people I talked to weren’t interested either. I just kept going. I’m not going to hang the hat of my success on just 6 other people, who have things going on in their lives and between their ears that make them not right for my business!

This alone is one of the most powerful things about network marketing and Robert Kiyosaki outlines it in his book - The Business For People Who Like Helping People - in the show notes. He says -

Network Marketing is a great business model to teach people the business skills they need to be successful.

We recently stopped in a coffee shop in Orange County and I noticed a brochure promoting the franchising opportunity associated with the store so I picked it up. 

As we read over it, we had to laugh at what was required, vs what has been required of us to build a network marketing business to a level that essentially offers much more in terms of both income and free time.

Here is what the brochure listed, with my network marketing comparisons listed in parenthesis –

Own Your Own Franchise –

Single or Multiple Stores (wow, I have thousands of “stores” with my networking business)
Proven Business System (same with Network Marketing)
High Repeat Customer Base
(we have thousands of repeat customers monthly)
Fun & Friendly Environment (What is more fun than working in my yoga pants at home)
Established Company
(Established and getting better)
Extensive Training
(Can’t beat the training and support)

We Help You Get Started

Site Selection (No comparison, I can work from home, THEIR coffee shop or anywhere in the world. I’ve made calls from the beach!)
Lease Negotiations
(Well, you may have to get creative for space but you don’t need much!)
Store Layout and Design
(NON issue)
Inventory and Equipment Procurement
(stop with the big words…we have online ordering)
Customer Service Training
(Simple ask - how is that product working for you, my friend?)
Marketing and Advertising
(We have complete training on that and enjoy teaching others this powerful skill)
Ongoing Support
(Provided by the company - BAM!!!)
Ownership Qualifications
(Dude, we own it and we take full responsibility for our success or failure!)

Minimum Net Worth of $400k (Have a credit card with room on it, you are qualified!)
Liquid Assets of at least $125k
( we want to help you ACHIEVE this!)
Strong management, social skills
(these will help, and can be learned!)
Estimated Initial Investment – ranges from $241,500 to $440,000.
Whoa! For less than $1000, in most cases , you can be in profit immediately! Read on…

Even more staggering are these numbers -

It’s $36,000 just for the franchise fee, and you are locked into a 10 year agreement with the company. And, the reserve the right to terminate the agreement at any time for non compliance.

Okay, so what would you rather do? Invest $1000 or so initially along with some ongoing advertising and misc dollars and be in profit VERY quickly, or invest anywhere from 1/4 to 1/2 million dollars and not be in profit for a few years and be 

Now, let’s talk about Real Estate and Network Marketing and the two relate.

 

You can use this as an answer to the pyramid issue, or as a way to  share how we get paid in Network Marketing.

 

Have you ever bought or sold real estate, or know anyone who has?

 

Would you describe that as a pyramid, since the broker earns
a commission off every sale made by the agents "under" him/her?

 

Actually, I would call that pretty smart leverage, wouldn't you?

 

Our profession is VERY much like Real Estate, really.

 

A real estate agent pays to go to school, pays to set up his/her
office and pays all of their own expenses to launch a business.

 

It is a commission based business, and there are NO income guarantees.

 

It's all based on hustle. Your own hustle that is!

 

In our profession, it costs a lot less to get started, and there is actually more income potential through the team building leverage!

 

If you are using this in response to the pyramid question, be sure to ask first - what do you mean by pyramid? (Never assume, because sometimes it's just a way of describing how it's built, nothing more.)

 

If they DO mean something negative, just compare to real estate agents and brokers, the costs to start a real estate business and how the pay flows.

 

ACTION STEPS

 

Develop some simple language using these concepts so it flows easily off your tongue when the need arises.

 

Use this as an opening question - have you ever thought about going into real estate or buying a franchise? I’ve found something that pays as well or better, and costs a WHOLE lot less with no risk, would you like to hear more?

How to Launch a New Team Partner

 

First, congratulate them on their decision and assure them that they have made a wise decision; that you will get their questions answered; get them trained and be there to support them.

 

You can’t do it for them, but you can shorten the learning curve and assist them with what to do, and what not to do. If they succeed, it’s because they did it. IF they fail, it is also because they did it, or didn’t do it!

 

Next, set their expectations and DO NOT make it sound like a breeze. Let them know that most people will say no, but they don’t need everyone. They need to understand the law of numbers, averages, and follow up.

 

Numbers will create growth; averages improve with practice; and follow up will explode their business because of life timing.

 

Then, let them know you understand what is probably their 2 biggest fears.

 

2 Big Fears -

 

I don’t know what to say or do…

 

I don’t want to look stupid to my friends and family….

 

So, goal # one, BEFORE the why and the goal setting is - make sure they know what to do and what to say.  Make sure they understand the 2 ways you make money -

 

Signing up customers, to use the product.

 

Signing up distributors use the product and sign up other customers and distributors who do, too.

 

So, how to do that?

 

Educate them on how to make that list. Let them know that you “Get” that they might edit it. Talk to them about the top ten people first. Well connected, have the money, are positive and so on.

 

Then, set their expectations. You “get” that they may be hesitant because they don’t know what to say, so here are some ideas on what to say -

 

Listen to the show right before this one - 097 - as it has ice breakers.

 

Make a HOT list - REALLY close friends and family. 

 

I know you are super busy and I won’t take a lot of your time. I’ve launched a business, I know you won’t be interested in it but I do think you’ll love the product. I need a favor. I need you to order a box, sign up, or whatever, and just try the product for a month. I need some testimonials. IF you love it, GREAT, write me a testimonial and continue as my customer. If you don’t love it, no worries, I’ll never ask you again.

 

Would you be willing to do that for me?

 

Then, move to the list they will be contacting from a third party approach.

 

I know you are super busy and would not have time, so I wanted to get your opinion. I’ve started a business and I know you know a lot of people. I’ve always admired your professionalism in business. I’m expanding my business in your area and wonder - who do you know who is sharp, ambitious and does keep their options open for other ways of adding cash flow.

 

From there, make sure your new team partner knows the “system” to take someone through to present the opportunity.

 

 

Do they have a product order in and do they know and understand how to order products; and the importance of auto ship.

 

Do they know how to sign up a customer and a distributor?

 

Do they understand the tools?

 

Schedule a time to introduce them to their upline, if possible.

 

Explain conference calls, and events. Get the next event on their calendar.

 

Lay out a daily and weekly action plan that they agree to. They need to know how to get their first customer and distributor which you basically cover in the steps we already went through with their list. Put it into the calendar and schedule it.

 

Give them 2 assignments to accomplish in the first 48 hours, and these must be income producing activities. Get 2 customers, show the business twice; schedule an in home and begin inviting people.

 

Ask them how they want to stay accountable and how they want you to handle it when they go MIA - missing in action.

 

That’s really it. Pretty simple. Other than being available for 3 way calls, there is not a lot your upline can do, once these steps are fulfilled. 

 

THEY must make the list; MAKE the calls; Plug in and keep themselves in action.

 

ACTION STEPS

 

Develop a guide that you will use to get someone launched.

 

If you haven’t really launched yourself - DO SO!

 

Reach out to team members you have already enrolled and ask if they need support.

 

Write out your own daily/weekly plan so you can share an example.

 

Make sure your next company or generic event is on your calendar and you are attending!
