ANSWER
Do a personal inventory.
What is your benefit statement.
Be prepared to let them know what they can expect from you, should they join you.
Ask them - what’s important to you in your Network Marketing sponsor?
Provide good follow up - share Don’t story with Darren.
Be consistent online, so you stay top of mind.
And, at the end of the day, you’ll win some and lose some. I have. IT’s okay, let it go. Don’t be afraid to ask what you might have done better, or different.

Today, we have Glenn W Turner, who started in Network Marketing in the late 60s and you will be blown away by the income earnings that he shares from that time. High by today’s standards but even more powerful based on the times. His first 3 months are outstanding. My good friend , Donnie Walker, who I interviewed on show 60 is the one who introduced me to Glenn, and I just knew YOU needed to hear from him too.

Donnie Walker introduces Glenn W Turner
Glenn: I belong to the greatest nation in the world - Determi-NATION.
I dropped out of school in 8th great, in South Carolina and started selling sewing machines door to door, until I was 32 years old. Met a 19 year old fellow who had made $16,000 in 30 days in 1966 and he recruited me. My dad and uncle put up $5000 for me to get started, and that’s what I did.
My second month I earned $28, 500, third month $80,000.
Back then, I bought a Cadillac Eldorado for $7,000.
Went into business for himself after 8 months with a company called Holiday Magic.
First month -
$67,000 in sales, second month earned $33,000 and by the third month I was at $342,000 and went up from there and by second year I was doing $33 million. And, then highest year was $150 million and that was when money was more!
Then, I opened a company called Koscot, a cosmetic company. From there I owned 78 corporations, owned 19 aircraft flying around the country and we put on presentations.
It was $5,000 to attend a seminar and it was motivational. Less than 1% complaints, but some of my competitors didn’t like it.
The president of my Board of Directors was 23 years old.
Everyone made money except this who sat around and complained about what was going on in the world.
Had one of the first black president’s of a major company.
7 women became millionaires in four years in my company and one was a black woman, a maid! Many became multi millionaires and hundreds became wealthy. Developed many preachers and priests.
Started Dare to be Great in 1969. About confidence, goal setting, attitude and how to become a public speaker.
Lived in the village of “Anything is Possible.”
Didn’t worry about those who said bad things about us - we had a choice, let it in or keep it out. I decided to keep it out.
Jackie: you have a huge passion about personal development and mindset. Were you raised this way or how did it develop?
Glenn : I love people and have no prejudice. Color, race, gender - it doesn’t matter to me.
Trying to get even with people who stick it to you is a waste of time. If you had their mod, dads, teachers and backgrounds, you’d be sticking it to you, too.

I am 80 years young, don’t drink or smoke and my goal is to help more people before I die than any man who has ever lived outside of Jesus Christ.
Jackie: Sounds like you are well on your way. You ran into some legal challenges with Network Marketing. Tell us about that.
Glenn: There were no laws so the government accused me of making laws. Finally, I settles on a misdemeanor and after speaking in Arizona, to make a long story short, they indicted me on aiding and abetting running a pyramid scheme.
I didn’t take it seriously because I was running for United States Senate and almost got it. I had also run for Congress.
Spent 4 years and 8 months in the prison system, and it was the best time of my life. I became a driver, I finished my high school education and was paid 15 cents an hour by the prison. I became a janitor and was paid 25 cents and hour and the third year I headed up the library and was paid 35 cents.
The fourth year I became a state driver and was paid 60 cents an hour, so I tripled my income in 4 years.
Jackie: What did you do when you came out?
Glenn: I had a year probation, so I couldn’t do much of anything, but a lot of my friends helped me while I was in there. They would ask me if I was running a scam.
I started doing some public speaking for different companies. I got out in 1992 and never had any trouble then.
Jackie: What would you say the secret to your own personal success is?
Glenn: Never quit, no matter what. If your gonna quit cause it rains, you’re going to quit. If you are going to quit because your husband or wife doesn’t like it, something is always going to make you want to quit. Stickability - the ability to stick like a postage stamp until you reach your destination yet.
Jackie: People struggle with fear, especially about Network Marketing, what do you have to say about that?
Glenn: If it was a woman and you were a man, what would you do? Would you have fear or keep at it until she says I’ll marry you. You have to have the same desire!
The body is more powerful than the mind but you have to get the mind in charge again.
Jackie: How did you go about starting your business?
Glenn: In Holiday Magic, when I got within 3 foot of anyone, I was excited. You wouldn’t be on this earth if someone didn’t get excited. When you are excited, people want to know what you are excited about; they want to be excited, too. They want to be happy like you. If you aren’t happy, you gotta pretend you are happy until you get happy!
Donnie: You crack me up, Glenn.
Glenn: Well, it’s true and Donnie you are one of the most fascinating young men.
Donnie: I first met Glenn he was speaking in Florida and I had no idea who he was. He had one liner after one liner. I had heard of him but never met him and when I heard, I thought “wow, you gotta be kidding!” We were instantly drawn to each other.
Jackie: What were some of your takeaways Donnie?
Donnie: His tenacity and desire, he’s been knocked down so many times and most people would have quit. But, his desire to go, keep it up…that’s what draws me to Glenn Turner. I had a grandfather figure who was like that. I get that old knowledge and that experience. It’s inspiring, when you call him he is never down, always upbeat and never down. We face a lot of adversity in this world but not with Glenn. I want to learn more about how that works.
Glenn: Confidence is a bull fighter who goes into the bull ring with mustard already on his sword. Life is too short to be unhappy. Happiness comes from within and not without. Nobody can make you happy but yourself. God Almighty but you on this earth to be a special king or queen of the earth.
Jackie: Did you have that confidence when you were little?
Glenn: People laughed at the way I talked because I was born with a hairlip. So, I told jokes, sang songs through my nose and people would laugh at me and I pretended they were laughing with me. When I got grown, I wanted people to love me.
I never had a pair of shoes until I was 9. We were poor with an outhouse. I had 4 brothers and a sister, and I was the oldest. But I was blessed.
I had a handicap but I got it out of my mind and out on the lip where it belongs. Everyone has a handicap, some of us are too fat, too skinny, too black, too white, too Greek, too Jewish. We gotta hang up our hangup.
Jackie: Any advice for someone getting started today, knowing your struggles and yet great successes?
Glenn: In order to be a success don’t give up first. You gotta lay out a goal, make so may calls a day, use the phone. Although I like things in person. It’s so easy to be a multi millionaire. There is no shortage of money, some people just hold onto it.
People are worried about the economy, and Obama, George Bush, Bill Clinton. IF you don’t like them, vote them out!
Donnie: Glenn is having an 80th birthday party in August, the week of the 19th.
Glenn: It’s on my website and my Facebook page.
Donnie: He’s hitting 80 years old, and he’s one of the oldest networkers out there!
Glenn: I’ll still be doing this when I’m 169.
Donnie: He already has a network built in the big world.

Here are a few other things you need to know about Glenn W Turner.
In that first company, Holiday Magic, Zig Ziglar was also a distributor but Glenn was outselling Zig so he didn’t go to Zig’s training classes. He was already making $30,000 monthly. According to Glenn, Zig told him he probably wouldn’t make it!
Glenn’s philosophy is to help someone get their money back and then it’s up to them. 30% will make it.
Whatever you put in your mind is what comes out. It’s like learning a language. If your parents speak to you in Russian, you speak Russian. What you feed your head is what comes out.

ANSWER
Take a deep breath.
Dig out that why, and see if it is still relevant or needs updating.
Have a conversation and some good communication with those close to you, if that’s the problem. Don’t ask them to join you or even understand. Just ask them to support you, even if silently. Even if it’s just encouraging you to stick with something.
Write out a daily method of operation.
Create a new vision statement or dream book. Surround yourself with reminders; pictures, cards, posters, post it notes.
Do SOMETHING every day in your business.
Every day is a new day and a chance to turn it all around!

Today’s Network Marketing question is….
How do I find dozens of people online for my Network Marketing business and how do I avoid overwhelm?

ANSWER
2 parts to the question, attracting prospects and avoiding overwhelm.
Let’s start with attracting prospects.
It starts with your system, and the content you create that attracts and engages others.
It’s not about hype and blatant advertising, although we are tempted to do that.
I learned this from my experiences early on when participating on discussion boards, groups and forums online before social media sites.
I had a plan:
Engage and attract.
Bring back to my website or blog.
Capture their name, email, and sometimes other details such as phone and address.
Contact them personally as soon as possible, even though my auto responder was delivering information instantly.
Follow up, follow up, follow up.
Do this over and over again until success shows up.
And, it did.
Now, about avoiding overwhelm.
This typically happens when we are chasing bright shiny objects online.
I have avoided overwhelm because I have followed a specific system and daily method of operation, for nearly 15 years.
Blog and create content.
Market that content.
Show up online where my target audience hangs out.
Offer support, coaching, ideas, tips and build rapport.
Work with the once who come back to my site and “opt-in”
Do this over and over again.
Try it and see what begins to show up.

Marketing is Marketing - I was taught by Internet marketers, selling everything from used car secrets, to penny stock sales, to how to make money online.
These days, everything sells online.
3 million plus people a day go online looking for a business.
You aren’t selling your company.
You aren’t selling your company’s products
It’s not whether IT will work, it’s whether you will work.
Layout your strategy and blogging/online plan; begin to take action on it; stay consistent; don’t give up when things don’t show up immediately. They seldom do; but with time, they will.

I need a mentor, you say you can show me, teach me, train me….
ANSWER
Now, the interesting thing about this question is that I reached out to Mike and called him, but I never heard back. So, Mike, if you hear this, I’m ready to work with you, if you are serious and ready.
Here is the thing to note for anyone looking for a mentor and making a DECISION to take action.
There is a difference between wishing, hoping, wanting, needing and so on….
The difference is called making a decision and then a commitment. It’s letting go of any and all excuses holding you back. These include -
No time.
No money.
Don’t know enough people.
Don’t know how to start.
Don’t know how to use the Internet.
And so on. Name your favorite excuse here.
I can show, train, teach, coach and share everything I possibly know and have done, but I can not do it for another person.
We are all personally tasked with the responsibility of clearing through the clutter and obstacles in our way, or that we perceive to be in our way.
All it takes to get from Point A to Point Z in ANYTHING is the ability and willingness to overcome a set of challenges and obstacles. It’s learning to reframe the way we see things, the questions we ask ourselves and the words we speak to and about ourselves.
Before seeking a mentor, make sure you are really ready to commit and make a decision. There is ALWAYS someone out there who is ready and willing to commit to your success IF and WHEN you are also equally, if not more committed.

Okay, let’s get to today’s show, which is how to avoid that Summer Business Slow down, or in other words, get ready NOW for summer!
And, my apologies for not getting this show out SOONER! Now that I am an empty nester, I forgot about this crucial time of year!
There are extra activities, kids home from school and vacations.
In fact, as you listen to this, I am in Rome, about to return from a 14 day vacation with my daughter, cruising the eastern mediterranean. A bucket list cruise for sure, thanks to my business.
And, I do remember the days of fretting over the upcoming summer and what would happen with my business…
My struggles with this:
Small Children, home from school Hot Phoenix Summer Lots of Excuses I didn’t adequately prepare
Here are some tips for getting ready and we’ll cover that super important topic of how to prepare and work your business with kids, and then also when you go on vacation. Offline and online.
Kids:
Communicate.
Calendar and make plans of things you want to do this summer, activities and vacation.
Zoo, water park, camping - don’t be afraid to add this in as a reward for help getting things done.
Use chore charts - get kids involved. They do love to help.
Plan meals together and give them each duties. Teach them to clean up and then you use that time for follow up calls.
Let go of perfectionism, if you struggle with that!
Babysitting coop - see show notes for details!
Meetings? Schedule babysitters ahead and be prepared. No last minute frenzy.
Bulk up on prospecting and follow up calls now.
Squeeze small blocks of time in later.
Don’t be afraid to let people know you are home with the kids, and please excuse the background noise, that is one of the benefits of working from home! Sell what you can! Sell the benefits.
I used to use this as an excuse….
Lifestyle - talk to other moms and parents as you are out and about!
Vacations - plan ahead, again. Change your voice mail message to let people know when to expect to hear back from you. Sell the dream! You are on vacation!!!
Set away auto responders on your email and communicate with your team that you will be gone!
Also, postcards are a great thing to send to your hot prospects…a wish you were there…when you have a fabulous vacation! Plan ahead with addresses and stamps so you can buy, write, post and go!
Want to send postcards and cards with your family and vacation photos that you can upload while still on vacation and have them mailed out for you?

Online:
Set up blog posts NOW and set the date to post on specific days. If you do a blog post a week, you can work some double time now to get them done for summer.
Same with shooting videos, and really any type of content you create online. I do this with my podcasts, too.
You can also preschedule Tweets, LinkedIn Updates and your Facebook business page updates.
Use down times to jump on your mobile apps to keep connected (loosely) to Social media.
And, remember, you deserve some time off, too. Just because you work from home, and/or run your business online does NOT mean you can’t ever disconnect.
Remember, email is someone else’s agenda for YOU, as is any type of inbox. You control your time and your agenda!

Where are all of the women leaders and mentors? Women are often the ones getting it done and yet it’s the men on stage.
ANSWER
This is a timeless question, one that women have asked for years - where are all of the women leaders and mentors? Why do we hear that there are more women in network marketing and yet it’s the men who dominate the stage and the top income earners, typically, unless it’s a company that focuses primarily on women’s products?
Are we not asked? Do we not want to be there?
Networking Times has dedicated an entire issue each year to women, and have repeatedly asked this question.
My conclusion, personally - it’s a combination.
Men just seem to mostly network quite often better with men. Men come to mind when they are thinking of leaders. Book reviews - 1 in 8 or 9
Women - not a priority for us. Mentor better one on one. Want our people on the stage. Don’t like public speaking. Don’t crave public recognition as much. Balance with family and business.
Sit down with a group of women network marketers over lunch at a convention or event and you'll often find the conversation much different than that of the men. Instead of talking about the latest strategy to "max out the compensation plan", women will be actively engaged in finding out more about each other – families, jobs, interests, hobbies.
While this group may have just met for the first time, by the time lunch is over, many are well on their way to becoming great friends and already know much about the personal side of each other. Through this, we develop support systems to uplift and empower each other. And, we learn and develop good communication, listening and business skills.
Women are born to "get it done." We are multi-taskers by nature and wear the hats of mom, wife, bread winner, caretaker, friend, volunteer, shuttle service and more! Our primary focus is most often family, friends and home. This is exactly why a home business in Network Marketing is perfect for women. Our homes are the center of our universe and it only makes sense that we should make our living while at home, with our children by our side.
Being a mom requires flexibility. It doesn't fit into an 8-5 routine and that is exactly why corporate America is not a fit for so many of us. Network Marketing allows us to work a business on our own time schedule and fit all of the pieces of the "time puzzle" in to get everything done.
Women make such a difference in the network marketing environment because of their very nature of being nurturers, encouragers and supporters. We are the cheerleaders and love nothing more than to empower others to believe in themselves, even when we often have our own self doubt to deal with. While we all love recognition, we love nothing more than seeing those on our team reach the top and get recognized.
Network Marketing builds the inner confidence women need to succeed through product sales (yes, I said "sales" and it is not a dirty word!); team building and developing their own income through their own efforts. These successes and business skills are priceless and will serve us in all areas of our lives.
Women also think differently about money. We certainly want to do well financially, and enjoy the finer things in life. But our mission for earning money is often motivated to some degree by how we can make a difference in the lives of others, through the income we earn. A study by Thomas J. Stanley in "The Millionaire Next Door" shows that of female millionaires, the average donation to charitable causes is 7% of her annual income. That is almost three and one half times the average of most households in the U.S.
All of this together shows why Network Marketing is such a perfect fit for women. We can pursue our dreams and passions, while sharing an opportunity to "have it all" with others in our circle of influence. We aren't forced to choose between our job and our families. We can truly make a difference in the lives of others and enrich our families at the same time. It doesn’t get any better than that.
This is how we extend our leadership into the network marketing arena. Not always so much from being on stage.
And, having said that, we need more women on stage, so don’t be afraid to throw your hat in the ring and set that as a goal! That’s a win win for everyone!

Now, about Gauging your success -
I set daily intentions. It’s all I can control.
I have a daily and weekly to do list
Every night I reflect on what I did and make note. I improve where I need to and acknowledge myself where I am strong.
Consistency breeds success,
Too many people get confused by thinking about their business vs working on it, and working in it. Working on it is studying, conference calls and emails, training and so on.
Working in it is being in the trenches and engaging in income producing activities.
Set a goal for the next month - do a daily check in at the end of the day on your income producing activities.
Measure your own success based around that and make changes as needed!

Does Network Marketing not work in some areas? And, Jean Marc makes the comment, which brought this question to my attention and it’s a great one that I have heard for DECADES now!
ANSWER
I’ve heard it for years -
Network Marketing doesn’t work in NYC….the South….France….although I have a fast growing team there now….in small towns…..in the UK……in Australia….and on and on and on.
People are people….they want solutions. We don’t think that much differently from place to place in terms of what we want from life, what we are willing to do and so on.
Change YOUR mindset. Let go of that as an excuse.
There are WalMart shoppers, Nordstrom shoppers and Rodeo Drive shoppers…..
In every town, there are high end homes and basic homes.
Sports cars, luxury cars and bargain basement cars.
There is no right or wrong, it’s just fact.
The difference, in many cases, is in how each person thinks; how they perform and how they prioritize…
So, ask yourself, if you are making this excuse or objection -
How do I think? What questions do I ask myself? How do I perform in my business? How do I prioritize my time?
How is this all adding or subtracting from my bottom line?

I invited Network Marketing professional Paula Pritchard to answer this question and share her experience of attending Network Marketing events to move herself forward.
She brought along a tape recorder and would ask lots of questions of the leaders.
A former college professor, she realized she was not where she wanted to be financially, and Network Marketing provided the answer for her. But, she had a lot to learn.
She turned to events to educate herself, going home and transcribing all of the recordings she made.
She shares a great tip on how she got a basketball coach to finally take a look at the business. You just never know what’s going to get someone’s attention! Be sure to listen for that.
She also shares great insight on learning how to recruit and making the invitation.

ANSWER

Like anything, you need a business plan. You need a strategy and there are some specific steps that you can take to avoid overwhelm and that feeling that you are spinning in circles.
So, first, sit down, alone, with some quiet time and a pen and paper and get your strategy out of your head and on paper.
Your blog is your online hub of the universe. IT doesn’t matter how many SM sites you are on, if you don’t have a place to bring those interested back to, what’s the point of avidly jumping into social media?
What’s your purpose for your blog? What are your goals? How do you see the layout of it? Not the colors and design at this point, that comes in later, but the nuts and bolts part of the process?
What are 3-4 blogs that you like, along your same niche? What do you like about them? What would you model, what would you do differently?
How do you see your blog attracting people who are right for what you offer?
Who is your target audience?
What would they type into Google to find you?
What type of content will you create around this?
What’s the brand and message you want to communicate?
What categories or topics do you see your blog offering?
What domain name will you use as part of your brand and strategy?
Now, from there, let’s talk about an organizational strategy to do the most important things - create content.
Look at your calendar, and decide how much time you have each week to commit to creating content. And, then, marketing that content…..
All of this is part f your network marketing blogging strategy.
I create content every week, 5 days a week, and I market that content over and over again on Social Media, to my list and so on.

With all due respect, this is an excuse for something else, not a valid reason for not working a Network Marketing business.
My kids were my why and my #1 priority as well, and that is exactly WHY I worked my business.
Oh, I know, I used them as an excuse, too, until one day, I met one of my mentors at an event, and had a serendipitous chance to have breakfast with her alone at a B and B. I shared my challenges and she laughed at me.
As a single mom of 3 small children and a six figure divorce debt looming, she worked her business to support herself, her children and pay off her debt.
Here is what she reminded me -
Work your business FOR your children.
Work your business FOR you, so you have something later.
Get them involved.
Dream build and set goals with them.
Teach them entrepreneurial skills.
Take them with you to events when age appropriate.
Make it a family business.
Use a calendar.
Put their time first and then communicate your business times.
Share what must be done before you can do other things.
You’ll feel better about yourself, your business and life in general.
My kids only remember the good, now. Not times on the phone or any of that.
You can do it, but you have to want to!

The beauty for most of us is that we have products that we can retail for profit, and then reinvest that back into your business, for marketing!
Determine the profit you gain from the retail of your product. Develop your product story and the testimonials of others and then say -
I wonder if you would do me a favor. Try my product for a month. I think you will really benefit from it and continue to use it. And, if not, I won’t ever bother you again. I need some product testimonials to move me forward in my business and I would love for you to be one. Will you help me out?
Know how to place an order for them then, or sell them product you carry on hand.
Many solid distributors have come from original customers and product users.

Who doesn’t struggle with this, no matter what we do?
Key bullets:
Forget Balance, it’s a myth. Focus on blending. There will always be times you feel like you are neglecting one or the other.
Moms take on guilt (Dads, too!)
You would feel guilty in a job, too.
Communicate; goals and dreams together. Dream books. Plan rewards; plan business times.
Use a calendar.
Set priorities and talk about them with your family. (MLM Mastermind event has fallen over Halloween for years and I chose not to go because of my children!)
Know that there are always going to be those times that pop up when you are torn, and must pick business. Families survive.
Celebrate events and not always dates.
Get family involved.
Bring to events as age appropriate.
Share your feelings, ask for feedback.
You are doing the best you can, just like you would be with anything!

I give some ideas on weight loss and skin care in the show!
Whatever your niche, get creative, brainstorm, define your target audienve and layout a blogging and category game plan based arounbd every concept, keyword or concept that would complement nicely with what you are doing!

College is so expensive, should I go at all?
Is it worth it? They come out, in debt, move in with parents and their debt just follows them.
Or, should I take a GAP year and get started in a Network Marketing business? There are many people who have not gone to college who have been so successful.
In network marketing, if you can talk to people, and learn how to talk to people, you can be so successful.
I have grown up with Network Marketing and I love it, it’s just finding the right time?
Can someone this young stay focused? Well, there is no other option.
It’s sink or swim. Work hard, or it’s just not going to happen!
Questions I asked Charlotte:
How would you see yourself starting your business? Approach those your age, or those your parents age?
What about start up costs and the money to get started? Especially for “kids” your age?

Today, I am interviewing Mark Yarnell, a true legend in our profession.
I used to listen to Mark’s training CDS on my portable CD player at the gym. I am dating us both here, and I am sure they were on cassette before CDs.
I have learned a lot from him over the years and because I have listened to him so intently in my ear buds, I really felt like I know him. When we chatted on the phone, I realized it was the first time we had ever really talked live, and I have still not met him face to face. And, I look forward to that day.
He had me cracking up through much of the interview, and it truly was a fantastic hour!

Mark has very average beginnings, as he’ll share. He sure changed all of that with the empire and success he has created. It just goes to show that anyone, really, can do it too, with commitment!

Jackie: Well, Mark, I have to tell you it’s absolutely a pleasure to have the opportunity to interview you. You’ve been one of my heroes and one of my mentors since my early days 20 years ago when I started in network marketing. And so it’s a treat and a privilege and an honor to be able to interview you here today. So thanks so much for spending some time with us here. Mark: Oh you bet, Jackie. I appreciate the opportunity. When I heard from you, I was excited to do it. So thank you. Jackie: Well absolutely. Well before we get into some of your background and all the amazing stuff that I know you have to share about our awesome profession, do you have a favorite success quote or some words of wisdom that you’ll share with us? Mark: Yeah, I mean actually, believe it or not, it came from my father at a very early age and it really has guided me through all my career in network marketing. My dad said that, and he called it the, out of his arrogance he called it Yarnell’s Law. I’m not calling it that, but he did. It’s the law of six, three, two. Six words, saw by three words, saw by two words. Do one thing at a time, do it right, finish it. And I have been guided through my whole career by those words of wisdom and I’ve found that having the focus to do one thing at a time and doing it the right way and then not starting something else until I’ve finished that particular objective, it’s served me very well. So that’s kind of my favorite motivational inspirational quote, but it’s also kind of a substantive way of going about life, I’ve found. Jackie: Well I love that and I love the fact that it came from your father because I think that’s a strong testament to good mentors in our lives that guide us through and it’s always fun when it starts close to home. Mark: You bet. Yeah. Dad was a great man. Jackie: Well tell us a little bit of your background before you got started in network marketing. What was kind of your career path? Mark: Well I started out. I got very fortunate at a young age. A friend of mine whose father had been a car dealer was able to come out of retirement and buy a car dealership right after Bobby and I got out of college. And I was called by him and he said, “We’ve got a little car dealership over in Oklahoma and, if you’ll come over and learn from us, we’re gonna buy another one and then we’ll own two dealerships.” The guy’s name was Bob Mayfield. Wonderful guy. I grew up with Bobby in Springfield, Missouri. So I began in the car business and I learned from some real masters in a small town in Oklahoma and, sure enough about two years into the process, another Chevrolet dealership became available over in a small community and we bought it. So I spent my first few years in the car business at a very young age and it was really the fortuitous intersection of blundering into it at the right time, young time in my life. But I found that I really wasn’t cut out for dog-eat-dog capitalism. It got to the place where I was working 60, 70 hour weeks. I had originally wanted to be a minister, believe it or not. I grew up in a fairly religious family and after several years in the car business I decided it just was not a good fit for me. So applied for seminary in Kansas City, was accepted and went up and went through two years of seminary. And then actually wound up my first church was in Knoxville, Tennessee and I was transferred to Kansas City and ultimately Austin, Texas in the early 80s, which is where I was first introduced to network marketing. I was very vulnerable at that time in my life because the Texas economy had really cratered and real estate was horrible, oil prices were way down and what happened, Jackie, was a lot of my wealthiest contributors, the big tithers in the church, were going Chapter 11 and bankrupt. A lot of people don’t know this but a lot of times in a church there’ll be eight or ten families that are actually the biggest supporters of the whole church ‘cause when they tithe it’s a pretty substantial amount. So our revenue stream was drying up in the church and my income had been cut in half when a friend brought me the business opportunity that led me into network marketing. They used to have a picture of me in the seminary, I actually worked selling cars while I was going to seminary and that was back in the years around the Nixon time. Somebody actually put a picture on the wall in seminary, “Would you buy a used god from this man?” And everybody got a big laugh from that. So it’s been an interesting trajectory through life. I’ve done a lot of things, a lot of things that are polar opposites, but it’s sure been a great life. Jackie: Well that’s great. So it was a friend who approached you with the opportunity? Was it someone from your congregation or Mark: It was. As a matter of fact, it was the guy who was on steering committee who hired me as their minister. He called me and he said, he was feeling kind of guilty because the income had been so depleted and, I think in an effort to absolve his guilt, he came over to my house one day and he was all excited. I remember the only thing he had was a dog eared Xerox check copy for $112,000 and he was just breathlessly telling me that there was a guy on the check that was making this much every month and he wanted to tell me about this thing. He thought it would be good for me given my income had been depleted so much. And I remember thinking well this is the silliest thing I ever heard in my life. Nobody makes that much a month. But yeah, to answer your question specifically, it was a friend, a member of the congregation and he showed up with a big check copy an that’s what got me started. That was back in April of ’86. Jackie: Wow! That’s awesome. April of ’86. That’s a lot of money now, but that was really a lot of money then. Mark: It really was. It really was. I couldn’t conceptualize it. It didn’t make sense to me that there were people, well when he showed me the check I thought, man, that guy’s making a good annual income. That’s a good salary. I mean $112,000 in a year’s pretty darn good ‘cause I’d never made that. And when he told me it was a monthly check, I was a little bit more than I can even handle. I just couldn’t believe it. It was a real conscious shock to me to know that there were people making that much a month and frankly I started out just to prove that he couldn’t be telling me the truth. I started by doing a bunch of research actually. Jackie: So you didn’t jump in right away. |
